Working together to create the Flinders Gilbert agricultural zone
Development of a new irrigated agriculture zone in northern Australia is being progressed at many levels and by several agencies.
The primary driver is that provided by the North Queensland Irrigated Agriculture Strategy (NQIAS), a $10 million dollar investment and collaborative initiative of the Queensland Government and the Australian Government to develop irrigated agriculture opportunities in the Flinders and Gilbert River catchments of North Queensland.
NQIAS is being delivered by the Australian Government's Office of Northern Australia within the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport; and the Queensland Government's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is conducting the Flinders and Gilbert Agricultural Resource Assessment, providing factsheets, technical reports and other information to support the project.
Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Development Zone (MITEZ) is the peak regional development organisation for seven shires in northwest Queensland and have created the Flinders River Agricultural Precinct (FRAP) and produced a report for download, the Flinders River Agricultural Precinct Investment Profile.
Gulf Savannah Development (GSD) is the regional economic development organisation for the five shires of the Northern Gulf area of Queensland and have produced a report for downlad, the Gilbert River Irrigation Area Investment Report.
