Crop insurance research grants

Crop insurance research grants are an initiative of the Rural Assistance Package and are intended to support the development of risk management products such as multi-peril crop insurance in Queensland.

Guidelines for crop insurance research grants


The purpose of this scheme is to provide grants for research projects that aim to improve the availability of industry production data useful in the development of risk management products like multi-peril crop insurance.

Available funding per application

Groups are invited to submit an application for a one-off grant of up to $100,000 (excluding GST) which may be part, or all, of the financial cost of the research project.

Approval of applications is conditional on the Queensland Government having available funding. The Queensland Government reserves the right to decline applications for any reason.

Projects must be completed within 12 months of the date of approval of the project unless otherwise approved in writing by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Eligible applicants

Eligible applicants are businesses, groups or associations located within Queensland that have an interest in improving primary production insurance options. Examples of eligible entities include primary producer industry organisations, natural resource management associations, industry cooperative  or  collective  organisations, and or one or more of the previously mentioned groups seeking to work collaboratively on an eligible activity.

Scope of activities

The type of activities that this grants program are intended to support include:

  • projects that increase understanding of agricultural production by industry, region or crop production type suitable for use by providers of crop insurance for example an assessment of input costs
  • projects that collate, interpret and analyse production data on a crop type or regional basis.

Conditions of grants

It is a condition of these grants that successful applicants are required to provide a report outlining the outcomes of the project as well as aggregate data used in the completion of this report.

This report and the underlying data remain the property of the successful applicant however the information can be used by the Queensland Government to further develop agricultural policy including the provision of this data to third parties.

Submitting an application

Applicants seeking a grant under this program are invited to submit a proposal outlining:

  • details of the applicant seeking the grant
  • amount of funding sought
  • breakdown of the project expenses
  • objectives, proposed activities, outputs and the outcomes that will be achieved by  the project
  • anticipated benefit to Queensland agriculture and anticipated means by which the proposal will support the development of insurance/risk management products
  • any engagement that has occurred with the insurance industry with regards to the proposal

Applicants are also welcome to submit letters of support or other evidence from members of the insurance/risk management industry indicating their involvement in the proposal and their support for the proposal outcomes.

Following the assessment process, applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application. Successful applicants will be required to sign a formal project agreement that sets out the terms and conditions of the grant provided.

Approval process

Approvals shall be made by the Minister based on recommendations from an assessment panel managed by the Department.
