Frequently asked questions about strawberry varieties

What strawberry varieties are best to plant?

New strawberry varieties from the National Strawberry Breeding Program managed by DAF and from overseas become available to the strawberry industry each season. Varieties vary considerably in taste, size, colour, firmness, resistance to disease and rain damage, ease of harvest, cropping seasonality (early, mid, late) and yield.

Ask strawberry runner growers which varieties they recommend and trial a few hundred plants of varieties that you have not grown before. This will enable you to assess their performance on your site and develop management skills for that variety before planting large numbers.
