Food research facilities for industry
The facility is jointly managed by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
The Food Pilot Plant at the Health and Food Sciences Precinct, Coopers Plains, Brisbane is a state of the art facility designed to service the needs of the Queensland and Australian food industries.
The food grade pilot plant and associated food technology, sensory and consumer science facilities are available to conduct scientific research and trial new products or processes.
It allows researchers and industry to experiment and produce trial product under industrial conditions up to 1,000 litre batches.

Five flexible layout processing areas with plug and use service droppers providing:
- general processing
- high hygiene cool room for fresh product handling
- thermal processing and drying
- warm room for thermal operation or fermentation
- high hygiene cold room for meat processing
- six cold rooms
- dry goods storage and equipment stores
Over 120 individual food processing units including:
- freeze drier
- membrane filtration
- thermal processing including UHT and pasteurisers
- high pressure processing unit
A comprehensive services plant providing:
- steam
- compressed air
- RO water
- chilled water
- hot water
- individual room air handling units
The plant has Safe Food Production Queensland registration.
