DAF assesses the stock status of important Queensland fish species using the nationally agreed Status of Australian Fish Stocks (SAFS) classification framework and reporting template. These assessments follow a weight-of-evidence approach where an expert panel determines the status of each stock.
DAF assesses the majority of Queensland key species every other year. Some species have sustainability concerns however these are reviewed every year.
A species may have single or multiple stocks found wholly within Queensland while others may extend into other jurisdictional waters. DAF assesses only the Queensland component of these stocks.

Stock status determinations help guide DAF in decisions about fisheries management and research.
