Review and optimisation—boat ramp surveys

The boat ramp survey program was established in November 2015 and has since expanded to include more than 48 ramps in 15 regions across Queensland. During 2018, a review of the program found the program could be more cost effective without introducing any bias to the data collected. Examples of the changes are provided below.

From 2015-2018, surveys were conducted from 8am to 12pm (morning) and 12pm to 4pm (afternoon). From 2019, surveys will be performed from 9am to 1pm, and 12pm to 4pm. This increases the number of interviews without affecting the quality of the data (Figure 1).

Figure 1: The mean number of interviews completed per hour across all ramps and shifts.

During 2015-2018, four surveys were performed at each ramp per month (three on weekends and one on a weekday). From 2019, five surveys will be performed each month, two on weekends, two on Fridays and one on another weekday. This will increase interviews without increasing the cost of the program (Figure 2).

We are currently developing a cancellation policy for when the weather is poor or for when there are few trailers at the boat ramp.
