Sustainable fisheries strategy

The Queensland Sustainable Fisheries Strategy: 2017–2027 sets out the government's reform agenda over 10 years, paving the way for a world-class fisheries management system. It's the biggest fisheries reform in Queensland's history and will ensure healthy fish stocks that will support thousands of Queensland jobs.

The strategy is the outcome of a significant consultation exercise in 2016 — we received more than 11,800 submissions with an overwhelming response from all stakeholders that they wanted reform in the way we manage fisheries.

The strategy outlines 33 actions to be delivered across 10 reform areas, with specific targets that we want to achieve by 2020 and 2027.

Actions include:

These reforms tick off on a number of commitments under the Reef 2050 long-term sustainability plan, highlighting the Queensland Government’s commitment to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

To support the reforms, the Queensland Government invested an additional $20 million over 3 years to boost compliance, monitoring, engagement and communication, and deliver more responsive decision-making.

Fisheries Queensland will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community as we implement these important reforms.
