Lucerne production in Queensland

Lucerne is one of the most widely grown and well adapted legumes for the alkaline clay and alluvial soils of southern Queensland.  It is grown to produce high quality hay and provide high protein forage for grazing.

Lucerne supplies quality hay for animals in intensive systems.  It is generally grown under irrigation where up to eight cuts/year can be achieved.  In these conditions, it will be productive for 3 to 5 years.  Prices for hay vary due to quality and the demand depending on the seasons. Generally, hay sold during the winter attracts the best prices.
