Remembering Professor Joe Baker
News release | 25-Jan-2018
It is with sadness that we farewell Professor Joe Baker AO OBE, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday 15 January 2018.
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Director General Dr Beth Woods remembered Professor Baker for his passion for science and dedication to research.
“Appointed as Chief Scientist for the then Queensland Department of Primary Industries in 1999, he played an integral role in advancing research and development initiatives for agriculture, fisheries and biosecurity in Queensland,” Dr Woods said.
“A role he held for many years, Professor Baker was a man of great integrity and energy, and a role model for many.”
Professor Baker had a distinguished career and was publicly recognised for his contributions to chemistry, marine biology, and the study of the environment more broadly.
In 2001, Professor Baker was honoured as a “Queensland Great” for demonstrating a lifetime of dedication and contribution to the development of Queensland.
Dr Woods said she was privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Joe, who was a great friend, and mentor. He will be missed by those who knew him.
Our thoughts are with Professor Baker’s family.
