Fisheries habitats

Fish habitats support the state's fisheries. Marine and freshwater fish habitats are protected and impacts of development are managed by considering any threats to declared Fish Habitat Areas, marine plants or to fish passage.

Fisheries Development

Development applications required for impacts to fisheries habitats are now managed by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) at the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. Fisheries Queensland within the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries provide SARA with technical advice on applications involving aquaculture, the removal, destruction or damage of a marine plant and constructing or raising waterway barrier works.

Fisheries Queensland currently assesses proposals in declared Fish Habitat Areas on behalf of the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (DNPSR). Information regarding FHA boundaries and management is available from the DNPSR website.
