This working group provides operational advice on the management of the east coast Spanish mackerel fishery.
Spanish mackerel are recognised as a high-quality eating and powerful sports fish, primarily caught using line fishing techniques. Fishing for Spanish mackerel is conducted by commercial and recreational fishers and charter operators in Queensland – primarily from offshore reefs, shoals and bays, and sometimes from specific ocean beaches and headlands. Spanish mackerel are also an important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
