Pest prevention

Without strong intervention, hundreds of potentially invasive plant and animal species could become major pests in Queensland in the future. We have an opportunity to prevent establishment of these pests and avoid multi-million dollar impacts.

Preventative initiatives include:

  • legislation to prohibit owning or selling high-risk pests
  • surveillance systems to detect new populations as early as possible, while statewide eradication is still feasible
  • eradication of high-risk pests wherever feasible

These initiatives are explained further in the pest prevention Story Map.

Biosecurity Queensland has created pest risk assessments to increase understanding of key invasive plants and animals and provide a foundation for evidence-based policy development.
