The vessel tracking guidelines released in 2018 have been incorporated into fisheries legislation. For all vessel tracking requirements, please refer to the Vessel tracking policy, Fisheries Act 1994 and Fisheries (General) Regulation 2019.
Vessel tracking will help ensure the sustainability of Queensland’s fisheries. It will allow more informed and responsive management, which will benefit the fisheries resources upon which many commercial operators and regional communities depend.
Vessel tracking units
Commercial fishers required to have vessel tracking on their boats must use an approved unit and comply with the installation and maintenance standard when configuring, installing and maintaining vessel tracking equipment.
Authority holders have until 31 December 2020 to apply for a rebate through the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority to help pay for the purchase and installation costs associated with implementing vessel tracking.
