About the Pet Shop Code

The 'Queensland code of practice for pet shops' was released in December 2008.

The pet shop code was developed in Queensland in consultation with the pet shop industry, dog and cat interest groups, animal welfare organisations, the Queensland Government and the Australian Veterinary Association. The community also provided input through a public consultation process.

The pet shop code provides recommendations for the care and management of cats, dogs and other animals sold through pet shops.

Compliance with the pet shop code is not compulsory, however it will help demonstrate to the community that the pet shop industry is meeting community expectations for pet welfare.
